Issue #4 - BOLDLY GO
May 9, 2018
To date, this by far was one of my favourite day-rides, thanks in part to my ride, the Harley Davidson - Street Glide, which helped with the experience as well (Insert big-grin here): Destination? Vulcan! Yes, from the Star Trek series (Insert a ‘geeked-out’ smile here).

East on the #1
South on Hwy. #24
- Past Cheadle
- Past Carsland
- Past Mossleigh
...into Vulcan
Surrounded by endless acres of wheat, canola & barley, PLUS A FEW SURPRISES ALONG THE WAY, this 90 minute ride outside of Calgary is a brilliant prelude to what is in store for dreamers & Trekkie Fans alike.

** NOTE: PICTURES & VIDEOS THROUGHOUT **
Heading South into Vulcan, Alberta...The Starship Enterprise

Next stop is the Vulcan Tourism & Trek Station (Tourism Coordinator: Grant). From a distance you'll notice that the centre is built to look like a space station. Inside, you'll find a gift-shop & memorabilia that was donated, in part, by the family of Albert Cave. Opened in 1998, this 2,900 square foot building stands at 53 feet tall & consists of character cut-outs, costumes, and yes, the captain's chair from the bridge of the enterprise (signed no-less). Before you enter you'll also see a painted rock out front. This is the Gene Roddenberry Memorial Plaque, unveiled in 2008 by his son, Eugene.

WANNA GO INSIDE?

WATCH OUT FOR THE ATTACK OF THE I-CHAYA (SPOCK'S PET)

Next move is to take a cruze down main-street. Everywhere you turn you'll see references of the Star Trek show including Enterprise Street Lamps to Murals to a Bust of Leonard Nemoy & his hand-print, Post office stamps, and a drink from "The Great Full Cup" coffee shop (Owners: J-Nel & Lyle) titled, a "Spockachino...you could say that the locals LOVE their name-sake!
HAVE A LOOK AT THIS!!!

Frankly, this is the tip of this tremendous ice-berg of fun, nostalgia & incredible community! Make a point to stay for the night. When the streets light-up, the magic of Vulcan is just beginning. Rumor has it that a 'Bird of Prey' will soon grace this town...let's just say I heard this from a Romulan.
On the return trip to Calgary, may I suggest going back the same way & making a stop at Aspen Crossing (Say hi to Angie in the gift shop)...a couple km's outside of Mossleigh. Equipped with a campground, tavern, gift-shop & a rail-car restaurant that was once John Diefenbaker's campaign car...cool.

This was indeed one of my favorite, so far, day-trip rides outside of Calgary. As always, don't be in a rush. Enjoy the ride & enjoy the many sights that Albertan's have left for you to enjoy...I know I did.
