The ticket said, doors open at 7. What I didn’t expect, that there would be a lineup down the block, around the back, into the alley! Yep, we were at the back of the line. You never want to be at the back of the line. It’s lonely, so I thought. It’s uneventful, so I thought. Nothing ever good happens when at the back of the line, so I thought. Have a look:
This was the Season 2 premiere of a TV show, Kim’s Convenience. The Plaza, quaintly tucked away in the community of Kensington, was the venue. If you know the Plaza, you know this theatre-style venue has an old-school feel, with limited seating capacity…but on this night, that didn’t matter.
When you stand at the back of a line that stretches for blocks you get this uneasy feeling about you. Basically, will there be enough room to fit me in? Options? Leave now, or take a chance? My Friend and I went with plan B…take a chance. Did I mention it was raining & unseasonably cold? Yep!
So, with expectations sinking fast, something happened. Not sure how describe it. This was more of a state-of-mind that took me over. One of, who gives a crap, just go with it mentality…so we did! In front of us were two ladies with a welcoming smile & an umbrella. Behind us were a family of 4, 3 of which knew me from an interview I did with them years ago, cool. Let the conversations begin! This group, unbeknownst to me, would form the catalyst to the night. For 45 minutes, we kept up each other’s spirits: jokes, engaging chatter, fashion sense. Then, the line moved!!! When you’re at the back of the line, this moment is the payoff for the stigma of being the guy at the back of the line. This moment was glorious.
Like a herd of cattle, we majestically slopped thru the newly formed puddles, rounded the first of two corners, then the second until the entrance of the venue was within site. Then & only then were our spirits once again dashed…THE THEATRE WAS FULL!!! Ug! All that time spent with self-medicating conversations, for not. A sad moment…but wait! An angel, understanding our plight, welcomed us with hope. She said, “continue down the block to the Prohibition Bar and we’ll take care of you”. What? Firstly, Prohibition Bar has an intriguing name, and second, what does, “we’ll take care of you” mean? Well, we were about to find out…let the adventure continue!
So, me and 300 of my new-found-friends, entered the NOW NEW VENUE, where we were greeted by another angel who was handing out DRINK TICKETS. Yep, DRINK TICKETS. OK, I was starting to like where this was heading. Shuffled further inside this warm, welcoming place we settled into an open area populated with tables, chairs & food. Yep, here came the food: spaghetti, giant meat-balls and pizza, oh my! What did the ‘back of the line’ crew do to deserve this treatment? Who cared, let’s just go with it.
So, with our bellies filled, our parched mouths quenched, the best was about to reveal itself. From a distance a quiet calm erupted with the arrival of ALL THE CAST MEMBERS OF THE TV SHOW. What??? The cast of Kim’s Convenience made their way towards u, like a swath thru a field, welcoming us, shaking hands with us, taking pictures and having conversations with us…just as planned. Little did we know, standing at the back of the line, that we were the VIP’s. We were the one’s chosen for the ‘special treatment’. What a night! After a few snappy-snaps with #Kimchee & #Appa & conversations with the Mom and Son and Producer with the show, the night was complete! Seriously, the night was complete & completely unexpected!
Lessons? You could just say that we were just lucky, ok. But indulge me with this one thought. When you set out on an adventure, expect the unexpected. If you do this, then you’re open to the moment. Sure, things may not go the way you wanted, but if you open yourself up to the moment, things may go in a way you always wished. Now, get to the back of the line for your next adventure.
