Exit 89 off of Hwy #1 takes you into the heart of Canmore. A left on 8th street and a right on 8th avenue brings you to Arts Place: site of the Canmore International Improv Festival (CIIF). Ambitious to say the least with 6 shows over 3 nights. But being the first ever you pull out all the stops. Along with the brilliant line-up of talent from across Canada (Loose Moose Theatre – Calgary, Picnic Improvisacian Teatral – Columbia, Rapid Fire Theatre – Edmonton, Det Andre Teatret – Norway) there are also workshops for anyone interested in exploring the Art of Improvisation. Having once tried this myself, trust me when I say this is SUPER-COOL!
These 2 hour workshops, at a nominal cost, include everything from silent narrative to connecting with sound & music, to techniques 101 and puppeteering. Great for actors or for those just curious.
I met festival organizer, Ali Froggatt, years back at Loose Moose Theatre and her love for Improv is off the chart! “I envision this festival growing & expanding & really getting attention internationally”. So, here’s your chance to help launch something never seen before in Alberta.
Thursday, was opening night: Maestro Impro. An international ensemble all vying to be the last impro standing. How do I begin to describe the indescribable? Everything from a human dentist chair to beer shots. With various performances throughout the weekend, this cast of characters from Norway, Columbia, Germany and even Edmonton had me & the sold-out crowd engaged, entertained and stoked with conversation for the ride home.
Here’s what’s crazy! It’s taken me this long to mention the brilliance that is Canmore. Make a day of it this weekend. Enjoy the mountains while you’re here. Enjoy a few bevvies while you’re hear. But most importantly, enjoy the laughs while you are here…we did, on all three levels. Festival is on NOW ‘till Aug. 13th.
